Project Title:

Luminous Lanterns

Installed:

Blacksburg Farmers Market

Luminous Lanterns is an interactive installation designed by architect Aki Ishida. It uses proximity sensors, full-spectrum LED panels and some complex coding to detect activity within the farmers market structure in Blacksburg, VA. The market was a central hub for a weekend of events revolving around an annual competition hosted by the Virginia Society-AIA.

As more activity is detected in an area, the paper kites suspended would change slowly from a soft pink to fiery red, and a recording of Japanese wind chimes would play. Simultaneously, the suspended paper kites would respond to the slightest change in air, like flower petals on the wind.

This project was done in collaboration with architect Aki Ishida.
