Project Title:
Luminous LanternsInstalled:
Blacksburg Farmers Market
Luminous Lanterns is an interactive installation designed by architect Aki Ishida. It uses proximity sensors, full-spectrum LED panels and some complex coding to detect activity within the farmers market structure in Blacksburg, VA. The market was a central hub for a weekend of events revolving around an annual competition hosted by the Virginia Society-AIA.
As more activity is detected in an area, the paper kites suspended would change slowly from a soft pink to fiery red, and a recording of Japanese wind chimes would play. Simultaneously, the suspended paper kites would respond to the slightest change in air, like flower petals on the wind. I acted as project assistant, responsible for execution and documentation of the event.
